What this tool does

Counts words, characters, sentences, and paragraphs as you type, with a reading-time estimate alongside — useful for meeting a word count, checking something fits a character limit, or getting a rough sense of how long a piece takes to read.

How to use it

Type or paste text into the box. Every count updates automatically as you go — there's nothing to press.

How each number is counted

Words are runs of non-whitespace text separated by whitespace. Sentences are counted by runs of text ending in ., !, or ? — a reasonable approximation, though it can miscount abbreviations like "Dr." as a sentence break. Paragraphs are blocks of text separated by a blank line.

Questions

Is this Word Counter free?

Yes, completely, with no signup and no limit on how much text you check.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. Every count updates locally in your browser as you type — nothing is sent anywhere.

How is reading time calculated?

Using 200 words per minute, a commonly cited average adult silent-reading speed, rounded up to the nearest minute. It's a reasonable estimate for general prose, not a precise measurement — technical or dense text usually reads slower than that.

Why might the character count seem off compared to another tool?

This counts by visible character (technically, Unicode code point) rather than by raw UTF-16 code unit, so most emoji and accented characters count as one character each — the way you'd naturally count them by eye. Some simpler tools count raw code units instead, which can show certain emoji as two characters.
